This is the World’s Costliest Fish

Yes, you heard correctly. I am talking about the Asian Arowana, the World’s most expensive pet fish. It is also known as the dragon fish. I was unaware of this species as I am not an avid fish collector. You too wouldn’t unless you are a collector yourself. I came across an article about Emily Voigt, who is the publisher of the book on Asian Arowana, The Dragon Behind the Glass: A True Story of Power, Obsession, and the World’s Most Coveted Fish.

This pet can grow up to 3 feet long and can cost up to a whopping $150,000. Are you dumbstruck? I too was. It left me wondering as to what makes this so expensive. The reasons are many. Once you catch a glimpse of this fish, it will etch an indelible mark on your memory. A streamlined body, complemented by sparkling scales makes it mesmerizing. Owing to its size, it needs a massive tank. Breeding is a lot more expensive as it requires high-quality food.

Apart from this, the Arowanas are considered lucky (Feng Sui) fish as it is believed that this fish attracts luck, prosperity, and money. This is one of the main reasons for its demand. It is an endangered species now, but its rarity transformed it into a status symbol around 1980. Now, baby Arowanas around 1 feet long fetch an amount of $1000-2000. Arowanas reach sexual maturity in about 3-5 years and produce about 50-300 eggs. Then the male incubates the eggs in his mouth till the babies are able to fend for themselves.
