Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a Clean India mission led by the government of India with an ambition of clean India. This campaign was launched officially by the Government of India on 145th birthday anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd of October, 2014. It was launched at the Rajghat, New Delhi (cremation of Mahatma Gandhi). “A clean India would be the best tribute India could pay to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150 birth anniversary in 2019,” said Shri Narendra Modi as he launched the Swachh Bharat Mission. It is India’s biggest ever cleanliness drive. It is a politics free campaign and inspired by the patriotism. It is launched as a responsibility of the each and every Indian citizen to make this country cleaner.
The Prime Minister has helped spread the message of Swachh Bharat by urging people through his words & action. He carried out a cleanliness drive in Varanasi as well. He wielded a spade near River Ganga at Assi Ghat in Varanasi under the Clean India Mission. He was joined by a large group of local people who cooperated in the Swachhta Abhiyan. Understanding the significance of sanitation, Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has simultaneously addressed the health problems that Indians families have to deal with due to lack of proper toilets in their homes.
By inviting people to participate in the drive, the Swachhta Abhiyan has turned into a National Movement. A sense of responsibility has been evoked among the people through the Clean India Movement. With citizens now becoming active participants in cleanliness activities across the nation, the dream of a ‘Clean India’ once seen by Mahatma Gandhi has begun to get a shape.
Aim (Swachh Bharat) :-

A Clean and Green India :-
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is not just about cleaning surroundings but also seeking the participation of people in planting tree, creating trash-free environment, providing sanitation facilities and paving a way for Swachh Bharat eventually. A Clean India is of utmost importance for promoting the nation as an ideal destination for tourists from across the world. Images of unclean India often become a matter of embarrassment for Indians therefore this is the right time and opportunity to participate towards Swachh Bharat. This campaign will not only help citizens adopt good habits of cleanliness but also boost our image as a nation, sincerely working towards cleanliness.
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has received support from all parts of society.It has received financial as well as technical support from the World Bank. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is expected to cost over ₹620 billion (US$9.2 billion). Total fund mobilized under Swachh Bharat Kosh (SBK) as on 31 January 2016 stood at ₹3.69 billion (US$55 million). The government provides an incentive of ₹12,000 (US$180) for each toilet constructed by a BPL family.
Various celebrities, Public Figures and Dignitaries have come forward to support Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Initially the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi had selected 9 public figures to promote this campaign- Sachin Tendulkar, Salman Khan, Mridul Sinha, Priyanka Chopra, Shashi Tharoor, Kamal Hassan, Anil Ambani, Baba Ramdev and Team of Tarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah. Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu picked up a broom to help clean the cyclone-hit port city of Visakhapatnam in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, as part of the cleanliness campaign.More than 3 million government employees and school and college students are to participate in the drive.
Organisations like ICICI Bank, Punjab National Bank, XLRI Jamshedpur and IIM-Bangalore initiated mass cleanliness drives and spread awareness among the general public.
Steps to promote Swachh Bharat Abhiyan :-
Real Time Monitoring :-
The government will be launching a nationwide real-time monitoring system for toilets constructed under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. For this the government of India is bringing awareness among the people through advertisements and various initiatives. With this system, the government aims to attain a fully open defecation free India by 2019.
Swachh Bharat Challenge :-
Swachh Bharat Challenge is an initiative to share your experiences of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and invite other people to accept the challenge and join hands in the Abhiyan.
Swachh Bharat Activity :-
Swachh Bharat Activity enables you to share “before” and “after” pictures and videos of your contribution to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
My Clean India :-
The ‘#MyCleanIndia’ was also launched simultaneously as a part of the mission drive to highlight the cleanliness work carried out by citizens across the nation.
As a result of various efforts by government, NGO’s and public Swachh Bharat is becoming more and more successful. People from all sectors are increasingly getting involved in this campaign. An Individual (if can’t participate in swachh bharat challenge) can at least make sure that he/she doesn’t litter around and uses dustbin for throwing the wastes into. Even a small contribution matters a lot and the objective of Clean India can be easily achieved by 2019.
