Are looks everything? You may argue with me. When you are preparing for an interview, what are the attributes that you work on? Only looks? Or the way you speak? What about your body language? Very few people must be knowing this fact that HR people are mostly accompanied by behaviour analysts during an interview. If you argue that looks are everything… then what about the acid attack victims? Do they stop living? No, not at all. Looks may be something but not everything.
Does this something give you the right to body shaming? Wait, is this term new to you? For those who don’t know, body shaming is an act of making remarks or criticizing someone regarding their body shape or size. This is a common practice. We are biased towards what our eyes see. There are professions which call for a 36-24-36 figure, a more important criteria, the one which is considered perfect. As far as acting is concerned, the Indian film industry considers it to be a more important criteria. But there are people having better acting skills but do not possess the so-called ‘perfect’ figure.
If someone is fat, we make a humiliating remark…’Be thin’ and vice-versa. If everyone had possessed the perfect figure, it would have been so boring. Don’t you think! Body shape adds to the originality of a person. A person is beautiful in his/her own way. Don’t let people’s opinion control you. Don’t just be conscious of ‘Shape Of You’. It’s your life…your perspective.
Guys, I am not a feminist. Not only girls, even boys are victims of body shaming. The moment someone comments on their lanky or chubby physique, they immediately start joining gyms to get a muscular figure. Does anyone have the right to change the way you see yourself? Come on, you are the way you want to be.
- Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor became victims to body shaming after childbirth.
- Jay Cutler is one of the recent victims of this disturbing trend.
- Even Vin Diesel was body shamed despite having a muscular figure.

Talking about relationships, a recent study revealed that couples had increased body issues as compared to those who were single. The study also revealed that men who had poor images of their bodies viewed them differently from how they viewed themselves. The study was done specifically to show how body shaming affects men. The research confirmed that there is an increase in a number of men who sought treatment for dissatisfaction with their body image. Men are expected to show their masculinity and strength through their physical appearance hence causing this.
This is not a good practice. This often results into depression. You don’t need to please anyone. Just please yourself. This is only boosting the consumerism of products like Nutri-gain and Nutri-slim. Don’t fall prey to this. Whenever you feel dissatisfied with your body image, think twice. You can’t control anyone’s thinking but you can control your thinking. Love yourself. Work out only for your fitness not for others. Be happy with what you are.
