Annabelle Creation: Review

A large cottage, deserted corridors, eerie background music…that keeps you at the edge of your seat. This is what if we sum up the conventional horror movies. Well, horror movies are obviously not a feast to the eyes but it is certainly characterized by an adrenaline rush. That evokes a sense of mystery, strikes terror and scares you out of your wits. I have watched a lot of horror movies. But I had never watched one in a movie theatre.

I checked out ‘Annabelle Creation’ here in Bhubaneswar. It is a prequel to the 2014 horror thriller, Annabelle. Well, going through all the reviews I was pretty sure that it will surely give that thrill to me. Life had indeed become a drudgery of routine for me. The story was intimidating at first. I had expected a lot of those chilly moments from the very beginning. I was in for a surprise when the story unfolded in a calm note.

Story

A family of three, Samuel Mullins was its head, lived in a countryside cottage happily. Samuel earned his livelihood by making dolls. He and Mrs Mullins were very fond of their daughter, whom they lovingly called busy Bee. All went well till an incident occurred that shattered the whole family. The Mullins lost their adorable daughter in an accident. After 12 long years, six girls along with their caretaker, Sister Charlotte came to live in their house. Mrs Mullins was down with some illness which rendered her immobile. Mr Mullins had offered to share their house with the orphans. How kind of him!

One of those girls, Janice was differently abled. She couldn’t walk without support. The girls were given rooms upstairs. But busy Bee’s room was locked. Everyone was forbidden to unlock that door. Without paying any heed to Mr Mullins’s warning, Janice unintentionally unlocked a secret door which set the evil spirit of busy Bee free through a doll. Then a series of supernatural events took place. The evil spirit was thirsty of a soul. It attempted to kill Janice.

She escaped twice. Eventually, the evil spirit possessed and dwelled in her. Sure of her presence, when Mr Mullins attempted to chase her away, she even killed him. This frightened all of the others. If the evil spirit belonged to busy Bee, how could she kill her father? Sister Charlotte inquired Mrs Mullins of the reasons behind all these mishaps. She came to know that the couple, unable to bear the separation from their beloved daughter had pledged their devotion to God in order to feel her.

They could feel her presence. She was all bubbly, running helter-skelter throughout the house. She wanted permission to move into her favourite doll, which they graciously granted. But soon, Mrs Mullins realised that the spirit was not of her daughter’s. It was some other evil spirit who was thirsty of souls. She scratched Mrs Mullins’s face and rendered her immobile. So, Mr Mullins, with the help of a priest had locked her inside a secret room in busy bee’s aka Annabelle’s(her real name) room after pasting the pages of Bible on the door and sprinkling Holy Water all over the room.

Janice had unlocked her room and was physically the weakest of them all. So, Annabelle was thirsty of her soul. What follows after, is a sequence of terrific events when the spirit kills Mrs. Mullins and even tries to kill all others. Do they escape? Does Annabelle kill everyone? Does Annabelle spare Janice? Well, you will have to find it out yourself in the theatres.

Well, I know this is a late post. But I couldn’t help myself from revealing the story. I was literally screaming every now and then. The background score was damn was threatening. The story kept me at the edge of the seat. Kudos to the story writer. The director has done a commendable job. But I wanted more of those jaw dropping ghost moments. Nevertheless, it sent a shiver down my spine. That’s all I wanted!

I too thought that. But watching a horror movie in a theatre definitely enhances all those sound and visual effects
