4 months internship is compulsory- says AICTE

Well, we are all aware of the fact that the number of engineering colleges has been increasing by leaps and bounds. This has degraded the status of engineers. Companies prefer simple graduates to engineering graduates for hire. So, in order to curb this, AICTE has some new plans up their sleeves.

If you don’t know, AICTE is the All India Council for Technical Education. It is a national level body for technical education under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, India. This body is responsible for proper planning and coordinated development of technical and management education in India.

The problem and the need for a change

According to AICTE, 60% of engineers graduating every year remain unemployed. They are not ‘unemployable’ but they are just ‘unemployed’. This is a huge loss of 20 lakh man days annually. There is a dire need of further training for these engineers. They are not fully prepared for the industry life. This doesn’t mean that they will earn 4-5 lakhs per annum, similar to 40% of their peers. But the question arises as they are not able to live hand to mouth. They are not even able to earn a minimum of 1-1.5 lakhs per annum.

The AICTE is going to ask universities to include mandatory internships as a part of the academic curriculum. Each student is going to attend two summer internships, two months duration each. Not only this, the universities will also award grades and credits to the students. Industry internships will also be included in the curriculum of M.Tech graduates. They are opting to teach, this is hampering the engineering industry. In the case of private engineering institutes, if they will not be able to fill 30% of the seats for 5 years consecutively, they will be closed down.

AICTE is going to announce the new curriculum in the next 10-15 days. Not just yoga, AICTE is even going to include NCC and sports. Fingers crossed! Lots of new things in AICTE’s kitty. So, guys, unleash your technical skills and get ready for some hands on projects. Plunge into the industry.
